With the help of Careers Wales, Jonathan Baker who was made redundant after 22 years with HMRC, decided to persue a totally different career path and undertook a Category C LGV training course with COTS. Read Jonathan Baker’s testimonial:
To Whom it May Concern,
My name is Jonathan Baker, I worked for HMRC for 22 years as a Revenue officer which meant I was involved in meeting and interviewing customers to try to resolve their taxation queries. Due to the cut backs I found that the dept I worked in was being closed.
Once it was confirmed that I was being made redundant I was considering my options with my current qualifications/age and reviewed the job market in the Swansea area. As I enjoy driving, meeting people and with the help of Careers Wales I decided to pursue a totally different career path and made enquiries into lorry driving. I had heard about ReAct II funding scheme through the Welsh Government for retraining, after I discussed this with Glynis Roberts (Careers advisor for Careers Wales). She then suggested 2 local driving schools.
I was given the contact details for training providers in my area and made an appointment to visit COTS in Fforestfach on a Saturday morning. I met with Jason Mowforth who went through their training facilities and explained how they operate. I was very impressed and had a good feeling about the set up in, it looked very well kept, professional looking and good quality vehicles.
I decided that I would choose COTS as the training provider and got the necessary forms filled in and sent off for funding approval.
Once the application was all approved, I started my training and passed my Category C LGV test first time, I also opted to take an RTITB Lorry loader (HIAB) course as I had identified that there is more opportunity to gain employment with this additional qualification (e.g. builders merchants).
I found the training very professional, with the right balance of tuition whilst making it enjoyable. Whilst it was very nerve racking driving the rigid lorry, the instructor was very patient, understanding and encouraging which I feel made the difference.
During the 3 weeks that I was training I found all the instructors very knowledgeable, friendly and approachable which made in my opinion all the difference.
I have since been linked up (by COTS) with a local firm (full time employment) who supply concrete blocks, beams and sand to building sites and am currently employed by them and working my trial period. This job involves using the lorry loader and driving a 26 tonne lorry so I am putting what I learnt straight into practice.
I can’t thank everyone at COTS enough for the welcome, level of training and the overall experience was 2nd to none!
