Subject & Learning Outcomes

This course will provide you with the basic skills, knowledge and information in order to understand the role and responsibility of the Crane Supervisor. Participants will be able to understand and follow safe systems of work for lifting operations including risk assessments and method statements to an In-house standard.

Training conditions are classroom based in which:

  • Steel capped safety footwear and suitable clothing are essential
  • Hardhats and vests are provided
  • Course manuals, notepads, etc. are provided

Training/Assessment and Testing:

The Test is in two parts:

  • Practical Test: Pass/Fail
  • Theory Test: 25 Questions (Pass Mark = 80%)

  • Introduction and registration Legislation – LOLER, PUWER, HASAWA Codes of practice – BS7121
  • Roles and responsibilities of personnel involved with lifting operations
  • Crane appreciation – crane types, capabilities and limitations
  • Duty charts
  • Crane terminology
  • Documentation and certification for lifting equipment and lifting accessories
  • Crane stability/ground conditions
  • Safe Load Indicators (SLI) and Safe Working Loads (SWL)
  • Lifting accessories
  • Types of accessories and use Slinging techniques
  • Down rating of accessories Sling angles Communications
  • Preparing a lift site in accordance with the AP’s safe system of work
  • Theory Assessment Practical Assessment Feedback and close
